✨ Benefits and Virtues of Surah Ar-Rahman

The sound material is the narration above (Tirmidhi 3291, hasan) — the Prophet's ﷺ recitation of the whole surah to his Companions, and the jinn's response to the refrain.

Grade: Weak
Be careful with "the bride of the Qur'an." The description ʿarūs al-Qurʾān is very widely circulated. It is generally reported via al-Bayhaqi and is commonly graded weak. We do not present it as an authentic statement of the Prophet ﷺ. 🔍 If you wish to mention it at all, verify its grading and label it clearly as weak.

What is not in dispute is the surah's content, and it is a stronger foundation anyway:

A sustained meditation on gratitude, built so the reader cannot avoid the question of whether they acknowledge what they have received.

One of the Qur'an's fullest descriptions of Paradise — two gardens, and then two more below them (verses 46–76).

The transience of everything except Allah: "Every soul upon it is bound to perish. Only your Lord Himself, full of Majesty and Honour, will remain forever" (55:26–27).

📖 Themes and Key Lessons

Theme 01

1. Teaching as the first mercy (verses 1–4). Ar-Raḥmān. ʿAllama'l-Qurʾān. Khalaqa'l-insān. ʿAllamahu'l-bayān. — The Most Compassionate. Taught the Qur'an. Created humankind. Taught him speech.

Theme 02

The order is striking. Teaching the Qur'an is mentioned before the creation of the human being. And the first thing named after creation is not food or shelter but al-bayān — the capacity for clear expression.

Theme 03

2. The ordered cosmos (verses 5–13). Sun and moon on precise calculation, the sky raised, the balance (al-mīzān) established — with the command "do not defraud the scales" placed immediately after the cosmic balance is described. Justice in the marketplace is presented as continuous with the order of the universe.

Theme 04

3. Creation of humans and jinn (verses 14–16). One from clay like pottery, one from smokeless fire.

Theme 05

4. The two seas (verses 19–25). Two bodies of water meeting with a barrier between them, and the pearls and coral that come from them.

Theme 06

5. Everything perishes (verses 26–30). The pivot of the surah.

Theme 07

6. The Day of Judgement (verses 31–45). The reckoning for both creations.

Theme 08

7. Paradise (verses 46–78). Two gardens with branches, springs and fruits — and then two further gardens below them, described in equal detail.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Q How many times is "which of the favours of your Lord will you deny" repeated in Surah Rahman?

Thirty-one times across 78 verses. It is the surah's structural refrain, following each item in a long inventory of blessings.

Q What should you say after "fabi ayyi ala'i rabbikuma tukadhdhiban"?

The jinn's response recorded in Tirmidhi 3291: "Lā bi-shayʾin min niʿamika rabbanā nukadhdhib, fa-laka'l-ḥamd" — "We do not deny any of Your favours, our Lord. And Yours is all praise." The Prophet ﷺ related this approvingly when his Companions had stayed silent.

Q Why is Surah Ar-Rahman addressed to two groups?

The refrain uses dual Arabic forms (rabbikumā, tukadhdhibān), addressing humankind and the jinn — both named explicitly in the surah. The Prophet ﷺ also recited it to the jinn on the Night of the Jinn.

Q Is Surah Ar-Rahman Makki or Madani?

Scholars differ. Quran.com's data classifies it Madani; many classical authorities held it Makki. Both positions are well represented, so it is best stated as a difference of opinion rather than settled fact.

Q Is Surah Ar-Rahman called the bride of the Qur'an?

That description is widely repeated, but the narration behind it is generally reported via al-Bayhaqi and is commonly graded weak. It should not be quoted as authentic prophetic speech.

Q What is Surah Ar-Rahman about?

Gratitude. It inventories the favours of Allah — cosmic, natural and eternal — and after each one asks whether the reader will deny it. It closes with one of the Qur'an's longest descriptions of Paradise.

Q How many verses does Surah Ar-Rahman have?

78 verses. It is the 55th surah, in juz 27.

Q Why is it named after Ar-Rahman?

It is the only surah beginning directly with a name of Allah. The name sets the theme: everything catalogued in the surah is an expression of that compassion.
