Understanding Islamic Daily Prayer Timings (Salah)
Performing Salah (five daily prayers) at their prescribed times is the second pillar of Islam. Allah states in the Quran (Surah An-Nisa 4:103): "Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times."
The Five Obligatory Prayers & Their Celestial Signs
- Fajr (Dawn Prayer): Begins at true dawn (Subh Sadiq) when twilight appears horizontally on the eastern horizon and ends at sunrise.
- Dhuhr (Noon Prayer): Begins just after the sun passes its zenith (Zawal) and starts declining toward the west.
- Asr (Afternoon Prayer): Begins when the length of an object's shadow equals its length plus its noon shadow (Shafi'i/Hanbali/Maliki) or twice its length (Hanafi).
- Maghrib (Sunset Prayer): Begins immediately after full sunset when the disk of the sun disappears completely below the horizon.
- Isha (Night Prayer): Begins when red twilight fades from the western sky and lasts until midnight or dawn.
